Frostproof History

Frostproof was established in 1850 and like many central Florida towns at the time, was constructed as a fort.  The fort (Fort Clinch) settlement was abandoned only months later. During the 1880s Frostproof the first permanent settlers, mostly as homesteaders, were moving in for the abundant hunting; consisting mostly of deer and turkey.  Fishing in the many lakes was also a drawing card.

Some folks say the name “Frostproof” (was originally named Keystone City) was used as a marketing ploy to convince people to buy land and settle here because the town would never “frost” and was a great place for farming and citrus crops.  Of course shortly after naming the town a frost killed most of the citrus in Frostproof.

Frostproof is a very charming place to live.
